Rievaulx Abbey pronounced ree-VOH was the first Cistercian abbey to be established in the North of England. Founded in 1132 on land given by my 28th Great Grandfather, Walter Espec, the Lord of nearby Helmsley.

I have always been very drawn to the heritage sites around the area that I live in North Yorkshire and I have often envisaged the idea of walking in the footsteps of ancestors but it wasn't until after I had created this print of Rievaulx Abbey that my Aunt, who is fantastic at tracing back family heritage, uncovered that we have connections with Rievaulx Abbey and I find it incredibily interesting that I've had such a strong affinity with this place as a source of inspiration.

These stunning ruins are one of my favourite places to visit in North Yorkshire, its so peaceful and the surrounding area has some fantastic walks.
